Mwendi Wega is a small estate owned washing station. The local community harvests SL34, SL28, Batian and Ruiru 11. The mill is located 1,610 MASL. Coffee is processed in the traditional washed method.

Processed with a traditional Kenya method, cherries are delivered to the washing station where they’re is depulped, and then fermented in open-air tanks made of concrete for 24 - 48 hours, before being washed in bright blue channels. The coffee is then soaked underwater for 12 - 72 hours before being spread onto raised beds to dry.

This one is a very light & bright Washed Kenyan coffee. We’re reminded of tart red Cranberries, which can be typical of this style. Through the center is a ripping Lime-like acidity, with a candied Rhubarb pastry element balancing sweetness with a slight earthiness. Of the three second-drop Kenyas, this is probably the most acid-forward and ripping cup.

We chose this coffee as part of our line up this year because we wanted to have a chance to highlight some small estates. While all 6 of our ken ays this year were purchased through the Dormans auction system via Cafe Imports, this second drop reflects smaller washing stations with a bit more wildness and character while still maintaining very high quality. Because these are small estates though, there isn’t much information available. As such we just have a brief description below, as its all we could find.

This Washing station was established with the aim to crate more transparency for the small group of farmers outside the city of Kerugoya in Kirinyaga. Together they collected the resources to build this washing station, to better support each other.
